The Fairview Learning five component program consists of the following:
1. Sound/Symbol System
An abbreviated sound/symbol system allows readers a basic structure to decode the printed word. Students are taught 21 consonant sounds and 21 vowel patterns that provide a shortcut to the phonemic code.
2. Dolch Words
The Dolch Words are commonly used words found in the majority of basal readers, divided by grade level. Students must be able to recognize these words instantly in order to read fluently.
3. Reading Comprehension
Structured reading exercises are used to teach better comprehension and decoding skills and how to use contextual clues. The Multiple Skill Series (MSS), a commercially available reading series from SRA, contains high interest, but brief stories which serve as pre- and post-testing instruments as well as teaching tools.
4. Language Experience Stories
Language experience stories help to effectively develop reading skills. A student dictates stories about his/her life to the teacher. The teacher then reads the story out loud and asks the student to illustrate the story. This technique builds trust and enables students to take risks with their reading.
5. Accountability
This child-centered program provides criterion-referenced tests, teacher and student accountability records, continuous, positive feedback, plus immediate reading improvement and authentic assessment. Immediate and positive feedback techniques for all learning efforts (assessment instruments and data analyses) are built into the program.
